What Is a RAL Colour?

Widely recognised across Europe and beyond, RAL is a standard colour matching system that ensures consistency and precision in colour selection, making it the go-to option for architects, designers, and manufacturers. Originally created in 1927, the RAL colour system has evolved to include thousands of colours that can be applied to a wide range of materials, including the frames and profiles of windows.

The system is divided into several categories, with RAL Classic being the most used for window finishes. This category includes over 200 colours, each identified by a unique four-digit code. (e.g. RAL 9010 stands for pure white).

RAL 7016, known as Anthracite Grey, is a popular choice for modern window frames due to its sleek, contemporary look.

RAL Colour Chart UK

RAL Classic – The most well-known part of the system, this includes around 213 colours.

RAL Design – A more extensive system with over 1,600 colours, typically used by designers and architects. This includes a seven-digit code that reflects the colours hue, lightness and chroma (e.g. RAL 200 50 30).

RAL Effect – This set includes metallic and pearlescent colours, offering additional options other than Classic and Design ranges.

RAL Plastics – Specifically for plastics to match the colours in the Classic and Design ranges.

How Do I Find My RAL Colour?

Choosing the right colour for your windows depends on the overall style of your property and the aesthetics you are going for. Some RAL colours have proven to be popular when choosing new windows.

Popular RAL colours for windows include:

7016 RAL Colour (Anthracite Grey) – This has become a rising popular colour especially for modern homes attracting the younger audience. It’s dark sleek appearance pairs well with many architectural styles offering a contemporary look.

Black RAL Colour (9005 Jet Black) – Jet black is a top choice as it contrasts with light-coloured walls and creates a dramatic statement.

RAL Colour 7032 (Pebble Grey) – One of the newest additions to our range, pebble grey is a wonderfully warm mid taupe. The colour falls in the grey hues category and can matched perfectly with one of our Rockdoors!

How To Choose the Right RAL Colour for Your Windows?

Here’s our step-by-step guide to choose the right windows for your home:

  1. Consider the surrounding – look at the colours of your walls/bricks, roof and landscape. Your window colour should complement the whole look of your home to make it look inviting, warm and welcoming.
  2. Think about style – The architectural style of your building may influence the colour you choose for your windows. For instance, newer buildings tend to use darker colours to create a more modern look, while white and greens may be better suited for traditional or rural homes.
  3. Long-term appeal – You must consider the fact that trends change but windows will last for years. You must choose a colour you are happy with but also think to the future if you look to sell your property, will the colour still be in fashion? Will it make it harder to sell?
  4. Check with samples – Always look for samples in person, whether it is visiting a showroom or requesting brochures. Colours can look different in real life compared to on screen or in a brochure, so it is crucial to see the final finish.
  5. Get an Expert Opinion – If you are unsure on what colour to choose, don’t hesitate to consult with architects, designers or double glazing companies. Here at DW Windows we can help you choose the right colour for your home.
